About knitting a sample patch
Share
If you want to test the expression of a yarn or measure its knitting strength, you can knit a test piece before you start knitting according to your pattern. Use the same type of yarn, knitting needles and pattern that you plan to use in your main project. Make sure the swatch is wide and tall enough for you to measure the number of stitches and rows per 10cm. Wet the test patch and let it dry. Then count the number of stitches and rows within 10 cm of the width and height. This number must match what is written in the pattern so that you get the same measurements for your project as stated in the pattern.
See our separate post on stickiness if you wish to read more about it.
Remember that a sample sheet is something you do if you believe it is important that the result is according to the pattern. There are many occasions when it is not necessary to count the number of stitches and then you do not need to knit a swatch.
